Mainland China reported a drop in new coronavirus infections on Sunday, but major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai continued to wrestle with cases of infected travelers arriving from overseas.

China has tightened checks on global travelers, with the capital Beijing ordering 14 days in its quarantine facilities for anyone arriving from aboard, starting Monday. Beijing is now loosening domestic restrictions on movement, with downgraded emergency response levels in many provinces and an increasing number of companies slowly allowed to go back to work. Guangdong province recently found an imported infection in a Chinese national returned from the Philippines, while Gansu province reported imported cases from Saudi Arabia and Iran.

They also say 13 more people have died, mainly in Hubei Province, with the country's death toll now standing at 3,226.

On Sunday, China reported 20 new infections, 16 of which were imported, including five cases in Beijing: three of travelers from Spain, one from Italy and the other from Thailand.

One coronavirus-themed hashtag was viewed 60 million times on China's Twitter-like Weibo site, with many users saying they wished US President Donald Trump was infected, and others calling for "strict" controls to prevent imported cases.

"But now Europe has suddenly become the new center of the epidemic, bringing us vast uncertainty". By the end of Saturday, 111 imported cases had been reported, NHC said.
