March 15-The Florida Department of Health reported another big surge in coronavirus cases Sunday, with 39 more people testing positive for the virus.

"We're still going forward as if there are pockets in the community because I think that it is the only responsible thing to do when you have a virus that is highly contagious", DeSantis said.

The governor also has been pushing to get more virus test kits in the state.

The state's emergency management director, Jared Moskowitz, said Florida is still finalizing details on how to deploy its drive-thru virus-testing station. DeSantis said large groups on the beach, as well as crowded bars and restaurants could put more people at risk of contracting the coronavirus. He said he was mindful that the operation could become overwhelmed by people seeking testing.

DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in Florida - President Donald Trump also declared a national emergency Friday - as he works to marshal resources to fight the pandemic.

Daily life in Florida is certain to be disrupted for weeks, if not longer, as schools are closed, large events canceled and mass gatherings strongly discouraged. State officials said they now have 1,000 of the test kits in hand.

"We're taking measures to be able to keep this a manageable situation, " DeSantis said.

The virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, for most people, but older adults and those with existing health problems can develop severe complications, including pneumonia.

State officials said they were preparing to set up mobile hospitals to help boost capacity, should the number of infections surge beyond the ability of the state's hospitals to handle the caseload. Miami Beach's famed South Beach is being closed nightly to avoid large gatherings of spring breakers from around the world there. All major cruise ship lines have also suspended operations. About 170 guardsmen are in Broward now, DeSantis said several hundred more are expected to arrive Monday.
