House approves retooled coronavirus bill; Senate to consider it Tuesday

  • President Donald Trump speaks during a press briefing with the coronavirus task force in the Brady press briefing room at the White House on Monday

In a press conference on Monday, President Donald Trump indicated that the Senate is set to revisit an aid package created to respond to the economic and social stresses caused by the novel coronavirus outbreak.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cancelled the Senate's recess, knowing the upper chamber would have to vote to approve the House's bill.

The House passed its bill early Saturday and on Monday leadership was working on a package of corrections when Gohmert signaled he'll insist lawmakers vote on the new language - which is problematic because most members aren't now in Washington.

Under pressure to quickly pass legislation helping American families cope with the rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak, U.S. Senate leaders on Monday were counting votes in the deeply divided 100-member chamber before attempting to act this week.

Discussions are already underway on these key pillars.

The state's attorney general, a Republican, asked a judge to block the mailing of the ballots, saying it was obviously illegal. For some counties like Volusia, Florida, and Maricopa, Arizona - by far that state's largest - that became a benefit.

"They're working together very well with the House", President Trump said.

Its initial passage last week came after uncertainty over whether Democrats could strike a deal with the administration, with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin negotiating for days due to GOP concerns over the impact of costs on small businesses and ensuring that no taxpayer funds can be used for abortion. It includes paid emergency leave with two weeks of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave. It does not include the $1 trillion payroll tax cut that Trump had called for.

It would expand safety-net programs that help people weather economic downturns, including home-bound seniors and low-income schoolchildren who risk losing access to free breakfast and lunch if their schools are shuttered.

This new disease is challenging our great nation in unfamiliar ways. 'No one is panicking and we are observing the recommended precautions, ' he said, speaking for himself and his staff. "They're working to only enhance it and make it better and make it fair for everybody". I know Senators on both sides are carefully reviewing the details and are eager to act swiftly to help American workers, families, and small businesses navigate this challenging time.

Second, Senate Republicans feel strongly that this bill must only be the beginning of Congress's efforts to support our nation's economy and stand with American families.
