  • Iran reports almost 1000 Covid-19 deaths

The latest 129 deaths brought the overall toll to 853 fatalities among almost 15,000 infections since February 19, when the government announced Iran's first cases of the COVID-19 disease. That brought its total number of infections to 94.

Fariborz Rais-Dana, 71, succumbed to the illness after being hospitalised for six days, ISNA reported.

Lebanon went into lockdown and Iraqis prepared for a curfew Monday as part of regional efforts to contain the new coronavirus even as businesses remained open in Iran, which is battling the worst outbreak in the Middle East and where another senior official has died from the virus. While most people who are infected recover, the virus spreads rapidly and can kill the elderly and those with breathing problems or other underlying illnesses.

It has since shut schools, postponed cultural and sports events and discouraged travel ahead of the New Year holidays.

The judiciary has also sent 83,000 inmates on temporary leave from jails, apparently over concerns of the virus spreading in the prison system.

What happens next will not only affect Iran's civilian government and Shiite theocracy, whose officials already have fallen ill, but also the wider world.

Israel's Health Ministry said more than 1,000 doctors and a similar number of nurses have been quarantined.

Speaking on the sidelines of visiting the WHO delegation and the COVID-19 pandemic public health experts' visit to Iran, he said that a comprehensive and coordinated approach is now being implemented in Iran, especially in the areas of patient management, laboratories, and risk communication.

Most people infected by the new coronavirus experience only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, and recover within weeks.
