Kentucky Derby being pushed to the fall over coronavirus

  • Trainer Bob Baffert who has saddled five Kentucky Derby winners says he's heard the first race of the Triple Crown could be postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic

The Derby has been postponed due to concerns regarding the outbreak of COVID-19.

The NBA, NHL and other major in-season sports have suspended play, and the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments were cancelled.

Officials at Churchill Downs revealed Saturday that they were considering the "timing" of the showpiece and Baffert - who has saddled five winners in the "Run for the Roses" - said that the first leg of U.S. racing's Triple Crown could be pushed back from May 2 to later in the year.

Much speculation has stemmed from a weekend dispatch from Churchill including a statement that "the time-honored traditions of the Kentucky Derby are as much about the fans as the race itself".

S. Korea reports 74 new coronavirus infections
Other major provinces and cities have also reported some infections, with Gyeonggi Province reporting 20 additional cases. South Korean soldiers disinfect Daegu after a second cluster of cases linked to a religious group emerged.

Billed as the longest continuously held major sporting event in the USA, the Derby has continued amid wars and The Great Depression, among other societal disruptions. "So I'm hearing maybe June or in September".

For the first time since World War II and just the third time ever, the Kentucky Derby will not be run on the first Saturday in May. That year it was in June. Baffert has had a horse win the Derby five times.

"Whenever they cancel The Masters, that's like the Derby", Baffert said, via the Courier Journal. It's kind of scary.

Michigan's State Emergency Operations Center is coordinating state-government resources and the response to the coronavirus spread.
