"We have ... seen other jurisdictions, such as Singapore, be successful in preventing the spread of COVID-19 without having to close schools", Hinshaw said.

While all of Alberta's confirmed novel coronavirus cases are still travel-related, Hinshaw said public health investigators continue to probe the two unclassified cases identified between Friday and Saturday.

All five cases are in self-isolation at home and are expected to fully recover.

Kenney and chief medical health officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw both announced six new cases of COVID-19 in the province - one in the Edmonton area, and five in the Calgary zone - bringing the total to 29.

On top of the closures, the province announced an additional $500 million in funding for Alberta's public health officials to ensure they have the tools they need for testing and treatment of the virus.

She says two of the people are in their 60s and in hospital in intensive care. Post-secondary institutions and students are expected to continue coursework digitally.

He says there are no guarantee travellers will be able to return to Canada, and if they do will be quarantined for 14 days.

Hinshaw urged religious leaders to find other ways to support communities without mass gatherings in places of worship.

"There is no good reason to be travelling for leisure at this time", Kenney said, adding he would be raising concerns with the federal government about screening and informing travellers coming into the province that they need to self-isolate.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday morning that starting Wednesday, most people who are not citizens or permanent residents of Canada will be barred from entering the country.

How each school continues to educate students long distance will be determined by school authorities and could vary between school districts, LeGrange said.

"We know parents, students, and school officials are very concerned", she said. "Let me assure you that our schools have been working on emergency plans to address this situation and the continued delivery of student lessons".

The risk of contracting COVID-19 in Alberta is still low.

Alberta Health confirmed the news in a press release with details about Monday's COVID-19 update.

Current recommendations are to self-isolate if you returned to Alberta from overseas before March 12, and to call 811 to get in touch with Health Link to secure testing.
