'On the precipice:' COVID-19 has Canadian Blood Services worried about shortage

Canadian Blood Services is seeking to reassure donors that it's safe to give blood, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Canadian Blood Services (CBS), which handles blood donations everywhere in the country but Quebec, wants everyone to know that it's still safe to donate during the coronavirus outbreak. He points to blood shortages being reported in other countries affected by COVID-19. "We need blood supply for our patients including accident victims and cancer patients so it is ongoing the need for blood", said Boots.

"The illness is kind of scaring people off to donate, but we're encouraging all healthy, eligible donors to come in and donate at any of our clinics", said Heath. "Our robust cleaning and infection-control practices protect all donors, staff and volunteers", the agency said.

There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be transmitted through blood transfusion, but the FDA has suggested that "individuals refrain from donating blood at least 28 days after resolution of symptoms after a diagnosis of COVID-19 or 28 days after the date of departure from an outbreak area or the last possible close contact exposure to a person with COVID-19". Canadian Blood Services is still accepting donations of whole blood and plasma at their London offices as the need for them won't go down.

"Our donor centres are islands of wellness within Canada's health system", says Dr. Levy, a public health expert and a former medical officer of health for the city of Ottawa. The Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center is asking people to make time to donate, especially during this challenging time.

Donors are asked to be on the lookout for rescheduled blood drives, and walk-ins are always welcome at your local Blood Donor Center. The national transplant registry for interprovincial organ sharing and related programs reaches into all provinces and territories, as a biological lifeline for Canadians.
