St Patrick's Day parades and events at home and overseas are not going ahead because of restrictions imposed to try to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Ireland's streets are usually packed with parade-goers, participants, onlookers, locals and tourists alike but today those same streets will be quiet and mostly empty.

In response to the COVID-19 virus, the organisers of Birmingham's St Patrick's Day parade have made the decision to postpone the parade, and hope to "deliver a world-class festival experience that Birmingham and the United Kingdom expect and deserve" later in the year instead.

Tourism Ireland's annual Global Greening project is still going ahead, with hundreds of landmarks and sites in over 50 countries going green including the London Eye, the Sydney Opera House and, Madison Square Garden in NY.

In a Facebook post on Thursday night, St. Patrick's Day event committee chairman Tim Burke stated it was "an incredible hard thing" to announce but cancellation was necessary.

According to parade officials, the 2020 Saint Patrick's Day has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

Early this year it came under threat again after Kiely Bros withdrew as a headline sponsor but was confirmed to go ahead when Court Collaboration and Chasetown Engineers were announced as official sponsors.
