Several cruise ships unable to dock over coronavirus fears

The advisory stated the Center for Disease Control and Prevention noticed an increased risk of infection of COVID-19 in a cruise ship environment.

Senator Sandy Senn said before the Carnival Cruise ship arrived, she spoke with port officials "who ensured that passengers would be properly screened, and temperatures would be taken".

A total of 444 Filipinos, of whom 438 are crew members and 6 are passengers, are expected to arrive at the Haribon Hangar in Clark Airbase, Pampanga, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement.

One of them has developed COVID-19 symptoms and is being treated as a suspected case.

"While there are no known influenza-like illness in any of the passengers, the decision to release passengers without proper screening is irresponsible and deserves examining further", Senn said.

The health scare arose just three days after Princess Cruises announced it was suspending voyages worldwide for two months in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

After docking for almost a week at Port of Oakland's Outer Harbor Terminal, the coronavirus-stricken cruise ship is set to leave the boatyard tonight and temporarily anchor in the San Francisco Bay.

The ship is now near the port of Chacabuco after the authorities banned it from landing passengers there, on grounds that it was carrying suspected cases of the coronavirus.

Other guidelines from the CDC advise those who have been on a cruise ship in the last 14 days to limit their interactions with other people and monitor their health.
