The brothers' initial response to their predicament was to consider local commerce, but, in the wake of the somewhat irate response to the story, they made a decision to wash their hands of the scandal by donating two-thirds of the 17,700 bottles to their local church in Tennesse, while the Tennessee AG's office took a third to give to their Kentucky counterparts to distribute.
The pair initially traveled together in SUV, stopping at a Dollar Tree, Walmart, Staples, and Home Depot in Tennessee.
They make a habit of buying large quantities of hot items to resell for a profit on Amazon and eBay, and saw an opportunity as consumers sought out hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes to protect against the spread of infection.
An online retailer soon halted their sale and the state attorney general sent them a cease-and-desist letter. "From being in a situation where what I've got coming and going could potentially put my family in a really good place financially to 'What the heck am I going to do with all of this?'"
As the backlash against the brothers began to grow - and they reportedly began to receive death threats - the Colvins chose to donate the supplies, local station WRBC reports. The Times reported that in the days after the first coronavirus-related death was reported in the United States, Colvin and his brother Noah drove 1,300 miles across Tennessee and into Kentucky to stockpile the products.
Mr Colvin said that from 1 March, the day after the first coronavirus-related death in the USA was confirmed, he and his brother had spent three days driving across Tennessee, buying up all the hand sanitiser they could find.

"As of today 3/15/2020 all items referred to in the NYT article have been donated to a local church", Matt wrote on his website.
Matt Colvin and his brother, Noah, began buying up all the hand sanitizer they could find from stores in Tennessee and Kentucky the day after the first recorded USA coronavirus death.
Matt Colvin claims he didn't realize that if he purchased all the hand sanitizer in every store that other people wouldn't be able to get any.
Matt had similar things to say to the Times, in a follow up interview.
Officials from the Tennessee attorney general's office on Sunday took the other third, which they plan to give to their counterparts in Kentucky for distribution.
"We will not tolerate price gouging in this time of exceptional need, and we will take aggressive action to stop it", said Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III in a statement. The courts may also impose civil penalties against price gougers for violations.
