"It has been a challenging weekend and a weekend of change", said Henry.

British Columbia health officials have banned gatherings of over 50 people in an effort to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

All hospitals in the province, including Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, are being directed to move to outbreak response phase two.

Officials did not confirm where the seven new cases are, only that they are in the Island Health catchment area.

On Saturday, Henry announced 12 staff members at the Lynn Valley care facility have tested positive for COVID-19, along with an additional staff member and a resident at Hollyburn House care facility in West Vancouver.

Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix made the announcement Monday.

The province is also cutting the limit for people at public events from 250 to just 50.

"This means hospitals will only undertake urgent and emergency procedures and will postpone all non-urgent scheduled surgeries - and it will be implemented over the next three to five days", Dix said.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada is closing its borders to anyone who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a US citizen.

He urged people from Washington and the rest of the USA not to come to BC. Washington has been the centre of an outbreak in the U.S.

The news comes moments after Canada shut its borders to most non-citizens and permanent residents.

"We think strong action has to be taken at the border", Dix said, adding that B.C. does not have the powers to close the border with the United States, with such a move a federal responsibility.
