Supermarkets shelves have been stripped bare in recent weeks as people have defied advice from authorities and stockpiled essential items like toilet paper and non-perishable foods.

Woolworths yesterday made the decision to open to the elderly and disabled only from 7am to 8am this week, after unprecedented demand for goods saw many vulnerable people missing out on vital supplies.

Starting on Tuesday, stores across the country will be open from 7am exclusively for the elderly and vulnerable to do their shopping before opening to everyone else at 8am.

The company is employing 5,000 additional casual workers to help restock shelves and serve customers.

"This will allow us to serve more customers and replenish shelves faster while offering employment opportunities for Australians working in other industries impacted by COVID-19", a spokesperson said.

Council of Small Business CEO Peter Strong said it was tough times in the retail sector due as the virus continues to spread.

The move comes after people on social media pushed for supermarkets to dedicate time for the elderly to shop.

"Because we can not see, people are stealing from us", she told Nine News.

The new hours will run until at least Friday.
