Celebrity chef Floyd Cardoz died Wednesday in New Jersey as a result of complications from coronavirus, according to reports.

Cardoz tested positive for Covid-19 on March 18 and was being treated for it at Mountainside Medical Center in New Jersey, the statement said.

In his final, chilling Instagram post, Floyd, who is a Top Chef Masters victor, gave followers a glimpse into his health struggles alongside a photo of himself from a hospital bed.

Cardoz grew up in Bandra and attended culinary school in Mumbai.

Chef Floyd Cardoz, the 59-year-old restaurateur based in the United States of America, has died. In 2011, Cardoz won USA $100,000 on the hit Bravo show, Top Chef Masters, for his rendition of the humble upma. "Top Chef" also celebrated Floyd, sharing a social media tribute that read in part, "He was thoughtful, kind and his smile illuminated a room". "He was an inspiration to chefs around the world and we offer our deepest sympathy to his family and friends".

In New York, Cardoz was also executive chef at North End Grill and opened Paowalla, which became Bombay Bread Bar.

The England global has since enjoyed a frosty relationship with the Reds' supporters, with many still holding a grudge against him for the controversial nature in which he left the club that had given him his professional debut.

Top Chef hosts, contestants and other culinary giants mourned Cardoz's death following the announcement on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Cardoz was in Mumbai to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his TBC and to launch The Bombay Sweet Shop, a modern take on Indian mithai, before leaving for NY on March 8. He was also the founder of the Momofuku restaurant group, which includes Momofuku Noodle Bar, Momofuku Ssäm Bar and Milk Bar.

Cardoz is survived by his mother, Beryl, his wife, Barkha, as well as his sons, Justin and Peter.

Hunger Inc., previously confirmed on Instagram that Cardoz had been admitted to the hospital with a viral fever on March 17.

Food magnate David Chang posted about Cardoz's death on Instagram: "Heartbroken over the loss of Floyd Cardoz to COVID-19". His spirit of openness, collaboration and playfulness has permeated his restaurants here - and for this, too, we owe Floyd a great deal of gratitude. Padma Lakshmi was one of the first to share a post in his honor, writing in part, "He had an impish smile, an innate need to make those around him happy, and a delicious touch".

Despite his many years away from home working in New York's cutting-edge and cut-throat restaurant scene, Floyd managed to retain a lightness of spirit that easily shows in his approach to dining.
