  • New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio left discusses the arrival of a shipment of 400 ventilators with Dr. Steven Pulitzer the Chief Medical Officer of NYC Health and Hospitals at the city's Emergency Management Warehouse Tuesday

Earlier this week, de Blasio had said there were no plans to close city streets.

"Everyone wants to make sure there are spaces for folks to get their exercise, to get fresh air, there must be enforcement".

The mayor also mentioned the city will be experimenting with closing two streets in each borough to vehicles giving pedestrians more room to maintain social distance. "We want to identify anyone in those categories and get them released immediately", de Blasio said.

It's unclear where or how many hoops will be taken down. Gov. Andrew Cuomo had suggested it as a way for people to spread out more outside.

The suggestion came after a correction officer and an inmate tested positive for the virus, as well as a strong push coming from several city officials, including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, said the New York Post.

NY is now the nation's epicenter of the crisis, with almost half of all the confirmed cases in the country.

"We think it's appropriate to bring them out in this context", the mayor said, adding that they still need the justice system "to function". "People want to walk. God bless you. But let's open streets, let's open space - that's where people should be, in open spaces areas, not in dense locations".
