The Australian accused of murdering 51 Muslim worshippers in last year's mass shooting at two New Zealand mosques pleaded guilty to all charges Thursday in an unexpected reversal.

He faced 51 charges of murder, 40 charges of attempted murder and one charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act.

He had previously denied the charges and was due to go on trial in June. The killing spree was the deadliest in New Zealand's modern history and prompted the government to rush through new laws banning most semi-automatic weapons. His change in plea came as a surprise and relief to survivors and relatives of the victims.
