  • The study in China- its first clinical trial for a COVID-19 vaccine- involves a sample of 108 people

Business Secretary Alok Sharma announced the same day that two projects focused on vaccine trials will be among the first to benefit from a share of £20 million in government investment.

This list details the type of treatment or vaccine being studied or developed, as well as their FDA-approved status (for other conditions - none have been approved specifically for treating COVID-19 to date). The United Kingdom has 6,726 infections and 336 deaths.

A project under Prof Xiao-Ning Xu from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Imperial College London, will receive £0.6 million for work on developing antibodies to target the disease.

Currently, NHS patients who are being treated for COVID-10 have signed up to take part in the trials spearheaded by leading institutions in the country, including the University of Edinburgh, Oxford University, Queens University Belfast, the University of Liverpool, and the Imperial College London.

According to the local press, unlike other clinical trials, the volunteers did not need to be infected with the new coronavirus that causes Covid-19, and the researchers will seek to determine if the substance produces antibodies and makes them immune to the respiratory condition.

The six projects receiving funding today are supporting and encouraging the UK's world-class researchers and experts to speed up coronavirus research including developing new vaccines and treatments.
