Andrew Cuomo: $2 trillion congressional deal would be 'terrible' for NY

  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo speaks to the media at the Javits Convention Center which is being turned into a hospital to help fight coronavirus cases

The Governor says the toll on the mental health of New Yorkers is also being addressed as thousands of professionals are offering free services.

As the number of cases climbs, NY is appealing to the federal government for more medical supplies to treat the ill.

Asked about media reports of some New York City healthcare workers resorting to using plastic trash bags to try to protect themselves, Cuomo acknowledged issues with the distribution of protective equipment and said there was enough in stock for the "immediate need" but not for the longer term. The Army Corps of Engineers is now building temporary hospitals at the Javits Center in New York City, the Westchester County Center and State University of New York campuses in Stony Brook and Old Westbury.

He said: "We need federal help and we need the federal help now".

At the time of Cuomo's press briefing, he said that 37,000 in NY state had tested positive for coronavirus, an increase of 6,400 from the previous day.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, has touted additional money and concessions his party managed to win in the past few days after Senate Democrats blocked procedural action on the package.

New York City's mayor, Bill de Blasio, on Wednesday expressed alarm at the fact that the city has only been promised $1bn in aid through the same bill, even it accounts for nearly a third of coronavirus cases nationwide. The funds do nothing to address the $10bn-$15bn in lost revenue NY expects to incur because of the crisis, Cuomo said.

"If people who are out on the streets continue to congregate with one another, continue to interact with one another which increases the spread of this virus, we will not have enough beds, enough ICU units, enough ventilators to support the people that we know are going to need them", Breed told reporters Wednesday.

Cuomo also signaled that some of the tension with the White House over the shortage had been relieved by a phone call with the president that morning, which Trump also said was productive during a briefing Wednesday night.

"If we don't flatten the infection curve soon, we will be out of ventilators in New Orleans by April 2, and we would potentially be out of bed space for individuals by April 7", he said at a press conference.

Previously, only the Ottawa Senators had announced that players-two, in that case-had tested positive for the virus. The player has been at home in isolation since the first symptoms appeared, has recovered and is back to normal.

Jones to take pay cut
In that sense, we are like every other club in the union: when we do not stage matches and events we do not generate revenue. We will ensure a fair and balanced outcome for the game and are now committed to update on this by the middle of April".

Even if automakers and others start producing in May or June, any ventilators they make still will save multiple lives because they can be used to help two or more people, said Dr. Jack Iwashyna, a professor of internal medicine at the University of MI. "Nobody in the world bought ventilators in preparation for a 1918 Spanish flu pandemic", Cuomo said. Not only is there a tremendous dearth - NY hospitals only had 4,000 ventilators in the system at the beginning of the outbreak and will need 30,000 - but Covid-19 patients need ventilators for 11 to 21 days on average, so turnarounds are slow.

She estimated San Francisco could need as many as 1,500 more ventilators and 5,000 more hospital beds.

Breaking the orders is a misdemeanor punishable by a citation with a fine of up to $500, Beck said.

Cuomo again stated the coronavirus will impact NY for some time. Residents are asked to limit outdoor activities to non-contact activities.

In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti said the city also will be enforcing restrictions against non-essential businesses that are staying open.

Despite rumors, the Los Angeles Police Department will not, however, be stopping people for exercising and leaving their homes, Garcetti said.

Hopes that the outbreak could subside by summer might not be realistic, a Harvard doctor said Thursday. That was our public health strategy.

"This is going to form a new generation and transform who we are".

The state itself has recorded 210 deaths at the time of writing, a third of the US' total.
