The CDC said researchers couldn't "determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces" and that further study of Covid-19′s spread through touching surfaces on cruise ships was warranted.

The 800 Australians on the Vasco de Gama, due to arrive tomorrow (Mar 27), would be quarantined on Rottnest Island but its 150 other passengers would have to wait onboard for travel arrangements to be made.

The 68-year-old man from Queensland had been on another cruise ship - Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas - which docked in Sydney on 18 March.

More than 2700 passengers left the ship at Sydney Harbour, catching trains, buses and even overseas flights to get home.

"I also understand one passenger, who is no longer on the ship, tested positive with COVID-19", Mr McGowan said.

The Australian holiday hotspot of Rottnest Island is about to become a coronavirus quarantine zone, albeit one most people would be happy to quarantined in.

The WA Government has said current staffing levels on the island will be sufficient to cater for the passengers, reported ABC.

For those who were keeping track of the news, you may probably have caught wind of the Diamond Princess cruise ship at some point, as for a period of time, the cruise ship suffered from an outbreak of the Covid-19 virus on-board, forcing passengers and crew to be trapped in isolation. Germany's Phoenix Reisen, owner of the Artania and Britain's Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which owns the Vasco da Gama, was not immediately available for comment.

Artania, which is now anchored off the west of Perth, is carrying 800 guests and 500 crew members. Two British tourists found themselves stranded in South Australia last week after getting off the Celebrity Solstice cruise liner in Sydney, and travelling to the city of Adelaide where they were told to quarantine themselves, they told media.

On March 19, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that the country's borders will be closed pff to all visitors.

As per an ABC report, the 800 people will be housed in the existing and vacated accommodation, which includes a hostel, bungalows, cabins and dormitories.

With infections rising quickly, Australia has ordered curbs, such as the forced closure of pubs, restaurants and cinemas.
