  • Quebec Premier Francois Legault responds to reporters questions as the government announces measures against COVID-19 virus Saturday

The outbreak has sent 67 people to hospital, and 31 of them were in intensive care as of Tuesday afternoon.

With Quebec now Canada's hardest hit province accounting for more than 1,300 cases as of March 25th, the government says the recent surge is partly due to a change in testing procedures, and that the spike in cases was anticipated.

New diagnosed cases spiked by a third on Monday alone, and notable jumps were reported in the country's largest provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. Community spread of the novel coronavirus in Montreal, confirmed by public health officials on Tuesday, could complicate efforts to contain it.

"Our children and grandchildren will remember how we won this battle, so let's make them proud".

The four previous deaths all came from the same residence in Lavaltrie, some 60 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

Legault announced that from now on, seniors home residents are asked to not to leave without supervision, citing the potentially "disastrous" consequences of the virus running rampant within a group that is statistically the most at risk of complications. "We are not in the step where we have to start giving fines but we have the power to do so", he said.

"Effectively, Quebec will be on pause for the next three weeks", he said.

About 2,500 people were awaiting a result Tuesday, while about 12,200 tests had come back negative.

Yukon, which has two cases, has strongly advised against non-essential travel in and out of the province.

He defended the decision to include government-run liquor and cannabis stores among the essential businesses allowed to remain open.

Legault said the decision on reopening at that time would depend on the success of Quebecers in reducing the rate of spread, and he acknowledged it was a hard period for Quebecers, with many out of work.

"We have no choice but to call upon the police and law enforcement agency to enforce self-isolation and social distancing", said Nova Scotia Justice Minister Mark Furey. You can find a regional breakdown of cases here.
