Key decision on this year's Wimbledon will be made next week

  • Fate of Wimbledon to be decided next week

The main draw for Wimbledon is scheduled to start on June 29 and continue till the men's singles final on July 12.

An emergency meeting is scheduled for next week and "in preparation we are communicating closely with the LTA, and with the ATP, WTA, ITF and the other Grand Slams". There are fears that there could be no Wimbledon championship this year should it be postponed, as it would be incredibly tough to reschedule the event for a later time in the year due to the congestion of the calendar already. Calling the event off now would also have ramifications for potential insurance claims, with the AELTC being able to argue the decision has been taken out of its hands should the government extend its ruling to beyond the end of June.

An official announcement is expected over the next seven days, but it already isn't looking good for the most prestigious Grand Slam event. But in the United Kingdom, that one fortnight in June-July, when the biggest stars in tennis - some who transcend sport - flock to the grass courts of Wimbledon, now hangs in the balance.

But moving it deeper into the tennis calender might be tricky after the outcry over the unilateral French Open switch. Once the tournament gets put back, there's less and less daylight.
