Jan Rudolph de Lorm, museum director at Singer Laren, told Dutch news site NOS: "This is extremely hard, especially in these times".

A painting by Dutch master Vincent van Gogh has been stolen from a museum in the Netherlands closed due to Covid-19.

The Singer Laren museum has said "Spring Garden" by van Gogh was taken in a raid overnight.

"I am shocked and unbelievably pissed off", said museum director Jan Rudolph de Lorm during a news conference Monday afternoon.

The museum later announced that Van Gogh's Spring Garden, on loan from the Groninger Museum, was missing.

"It is very bad for the Groninger Museum, it is very bad for the Singer, but it is awful for us all because art exists to be seen and shared by us, the community, to enjoy to draw inspiration from and to draw comfort from, especially in these hard times".
