In a move that could pay huge dividends for the Eagles' biggest rival, Aldon Smith is returning to the National Football League after signing a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys per Jay Glazer.
The Dallas Cowboys are apparently in the reclamation business once again.
The 30-year-old hasn't appeared in a game since 2015, when he played for the then-Oakland Raiders, due to a series of off-field issues.
Rapoport added that Smith's contract begins when he's officially reinstated, which "Dallas is confident it will happen". Smith has faced several legal issues since the 49ers made him the No. 7 overall pick in 2011.
Aldon Smith is getting another chance in the NFL. And now he's back, signing on with the Cowboys, according to FOX's Jay Glazer.
The following season, Smith was even better, rattling off 66 tackles, 19.5 sacks, an interception, and three forced fumbles en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection. He will reunite with his defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, who was brought in to coach under Mike Nolan on Mike McCarthy's new staff.
In between those seasons though, Smith was stabbed while trying to break up a fight at his home where two people were shot. A year later, he was arrested for his third DUI and was released by the 49ers.
A talented hybrid edge-rusher out of Missouri, Smith finished half a sack shy of tying the all-time rookie sack record held by Jevon Kearse despite not starting a single game in his rookie season. He's been involved in at least nine other publicized incidents, most recently in June 2019 when he was arrested for driving under the influence.
