Here is why nobody believes China's corona death numbers

  • For the first time China has released data on the number of its asymptomatic coronavirus cases- 1,300

The National Health Commission is due to start reporting aggregate, national data on asymptomatic cases later on Wednesday.

Beijing somewhat acknowledged their stats were skewed after they changed their methodology to include some asymptomatic cases, but it's unclear how many more asymptomatic infections were discounted overall.

Republicans in Congress, pointing to a report by Bloomberg citing USA intelligence, expressed outrage that Beijing apparently misled the worldwide community on China's infections and deaths that began in late 2019 in the city of Wuhan. More than 44,200 have died and greater than 185,500 have recovered.

China has registered about 81,518 corona positive cases.

The announcement about asymptomatic cases came as the other countries are including asymptomatic cases in their number of confirmed cases for their potential to infect others. That compares to more than 189,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths in the US, which has the largest publicly reported outbreak in the world.

While skepticism continues to swirl over China's reporting methods, there are concerns from western officials that Iran, Russia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and North Korea, which has not reported any cases, are also under-counting their cases and death tolls.

There is debate among experts about how infectious asymptomatic cases are but the commission has said all cases would be centrally quarantined for 14 days.It said 1,541 people with asymptomatic coronavirus infections were under observation as of the end of Monday. 'But what appears evident now is that long before the world learned in December that China was dealing with this, and maybe as much as a month earlier than that, that the outbreak was real in China'.
