Marriott will today notify up to 5.2 million guests of a possible data breach via email. The data of 5.2 million hotel guests remained exposed until the end of February.
Marriott first became aware of the security breach at the end of February, when it discovered a hacker used the login credentials of two employees to gain access the customer information.
Marriott said it was now investigating the incident, which it believed started in mid-January and was identified around February end.
Marriott said that investigation into the breach was still ongoing but noted that "the company now has no reason to believe that the information involved included Marriott Bonvoy account passwords or PINs, payment card information, national IDs, or driver's license numbers".
However, those logins have since been disabled while the group assists authorities with their investigation to track down the digital thieves. Furthermore, the company has disabled existing passwords of customers using its loyalty programme Marriott Bonvoy. No passwords or credit card information appear to have been lost.
The breach is the third such incident Marriott has experienced in recent years, most notably including a breach in 2018 that was initially thought to have impacted over 500 million users.
The FBI led the investigation of that data theft, and investigators suspected the hackers were working on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of State Security, the rough equivalent of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Marriott said Tuesday it has informed guests of the new data breach. The company is also offering free enrolment on the personal information service IdentityWorks for one year through which customers can identify information that they would like to get monitored by the service.
"Marriott also remains committed to further strengthening its protections to detect and remediate incidents such as this in the future", the company said in a statement.

An increasing death toll across both Western Europe and in the United States was a major contributor to the somber milestone. In the U.S. , about 3,550 people have died, about 250 more than China's official number.
