Rodrigo Duterte says he'll 'bury' coronavirus lockdown protesters in Philippines

  • Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said it was vital that everyone follows home quarantine measures

NY is the center of the USA coronavirus outbreak, with over 83,800 cases and almost 2,000 deaths as of Thursday morning; the next highest statewide death toll, in New Jersey, is just 355 cases.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered police and military in the country on Wednesday to kill troublemakers who violate coronavirus lockdown measures.

So far, Philippine has recorded 2,311 cases and reported 96 deaths forcing it into a two-week lockdown, which has resulted in protests from some quarters complaining of lack of food to eat.

He told police if they feel their lives are in danger when they confront protesters to "shoot them dead". "Instead of causing trouble, I will bury you".

Hours before Duterte gave the order in a speech late Wednesday, almost two dozen people from a slum community in the capital Manila were arrested for holding a protest that accused the government of failing to provide food aid to the poor. The severity of his words were also directed towards the outrage at how the medical community is suffering from problems of social stigma, with instances of hospital workers being abused and discriminated against popping up.

Referring to Wednesday's incident in San Roque village in Quezon City, Amnesty International noted that when residents were informed that a government relief distribution had run out of supplies, they chose to stay in the area and stage a protest to demand relief.

However, public activists aren't too happy about Duterte's fierce implementations, accusing him of inciting violence for compliance, as he did with his war on drugs that saw thousands gunned down by authorities just for being accused of using or selling drugs.

As frequently happens after Duterte makes an announcement that sparks concern, officials said the president used hyperbole to make a point.

On Thursday, however, the national police chief said police understood that Duterte was merely demonstrating the seriousness of the situation in his most recent address and that no one would be shot.
