Canada's coronavirus cases continue on an upwards trajectory, with Ontario and Quebec almost three-quarters of the country's cases.

Nationwide that number is 800,000.

Four out of five restaurants have laid off employees since March 1.

"In our 75 years of existence as Canada's national food service association, these are by far the worst numbers we have ever seen", said Shanna Munro, president and CEO of Restaurants Canada, in a release.

Provincewide, there were almost 2,800 cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday, including 53 deaths and 831 resolved.

Restaurants Canada gathered the data in a survey of foodservice operators across the country from March 25 through March 29.

"British Columbia's $15 billion food service industry represents 5% of the province's GDP and is the province's third-largest private sector employer". It says it received 655 completed surveys representing 13,300 locations across Canada. "Without the steps already taken, the impact of COVID-19 on our industry would be even more devastating".

"It will help reduce the burden on our public health units and frontline health workers, allowing them to focus their efforts where they are needed most during this challenging time", Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a statement.

In terms of government assistance, the non-profit is calling for rent relief and an injunction on evictions. If conditions do not improve, Restaurants Canada estimates that Quebec's foodservice sales will be down more than $3.7 billion for the second quarter of 2020.
