Mississippi State coach Mike Leach apologized Thursday for a since-deleted tweet that showed a meme of a woman knitting her husband a noose during self-quarantine. The meme showed a black-and-white photo of a woman knitting a noose with the caption: "After 2 weeks of quarantine with her husband, Gertrude made a decision to knit him a scarf".

The tweet received almost 3,700 likes but also criticism, including some from Mississippi State players who are black. Erroll Thompson, who was a team captain in 2019, responded with a thinking face emoji (before deleting it).

Mike Leach often posts odd memes on his Twitter account, but his tweet Wednesday made a lot of people upset.

Leach ended up apologizing.

Universities look to help students through pandemic

Margaret A. Hagerman, a professor at Mississippi State (who has since gone into a private Twitter account), explained why the tweet was troublesome.

She said "lynching "jokes" are incredibly offensive anywhere" and "especially in MS".

Earlier this year, Leach deleted a number of tweets he wrote that were critical of Utah Sen.

It isn't the first time Leach has raised controversy over a social media post, nor the first time in the last few months that he's retracted a tweet. The tweet caused an uproar among WSU fans and donors, who reportedly drew $1.6 million in pledges.
