The last update was Monday, and reported 28 inmates and 24 staff had tested positive across US federal prisons.

Taylor was tested at the hospital for COVID-19, but those test results have not yet been returned, according to the release.

The BOP now reports only 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases among inmates at Oakdale, plus another four cases among prison staff, but VICE News has been told by employees there that the situation is much more grim.

As of Wednesday, there were nine inmates who had tested positive for the coronavirus and 10 staff members who had come down with the highly contagious COVID-19 respiratory illness, said Ronald Morris, president of American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1007.

Jenny in Sunbury asked what procedure was in place to make sure inmates with pre-existing conditions are being monitored and protected. Instead, anyone with symptoms is assumed to have COVID-19.

A spokesperson for the bureau told the news outlet that the move is intended "to conserve valuable testing resources", and added that the bureau had no plans to release nationwide testing figures.

Attempts from the prison and the BOP to learn if the inmate had been recently transferred in were unsuccessful.
