NASA’s Perseverance rover’s new wheels can grip and better withstand rocks

  • NASA Mars Perseverance Rover Wheels

The rover had its wheels fitted for the first time previous year, but those were engineering model wheels which are used for fitting and testing, such as checking whether the rover could stand on its own wheels and take its own weight.

Three of the six flight wheels that will travel to Mars can be seen attached to NASA's Perseverance rover (which is inverted on a handling fixture) on March 30, 2020 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA on Friday said final assembly and testing of the rover is continuing at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida as the July launch window approaches. The protective antistatic foil covering the wheels will be removed before launch this summer.

NASA's new Mars meanderer, Perseverance, approaches culmination as it is fitted with new haggles huge compressed air brake parachute.

Perseverance, on the other hand, has wheels with 48 gently curved treads that are spaced closely together, which NASA engineers have found give the same amount of grip as the chevron pattern but can better withstand pressure from sharp rocks. Persistence's wheels are somewhat bigger in measurement, at 52.6 centimeters (20.7 inches) versus 50.8 centimeters, and are likewise marginally smaller.

Taliban warn deal with USA in Afghanistan near breaking point
But the Taliban insists it is committed to engage in intra-Afghan talks only after the release of all 5,000 insurgent prisoners. The national election commission declared Ghani as the victor but Abdullah, the runner-up, rejected the outcome as fraudulent.

Persistence has marginally unexpected wheels in comparison to NASA's different Mars meanderer, Curiosity.

Machined out of a block of flight-grade aluminum and equipped with titanium spokes, each wheel is slightly larger in diameter and narrower than Curiosity's, with skins that are nearly a millimetre thicker. It will search for signs of past microbial life, characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.

The job of adding Perseverance's parachute to the back shell, where the rover will be stowed on the journey to the Red Planet, took several days and was finished on March 26. The Perseverance wanderer will be the heaviest payload at any point conveyed on Mars, so the parachute covering made of nylon, Technora, and Kevlar fiber should be huge - 70.5 feet wide - to slow the full weight of 2260 pounds of the meanderer from Mach 1.7 to 200 miles per hour. No matter what day Perseverance launches during its July 17-August 5 launch period, it will land on Mars' Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021, NASA siad.

Perseverance is part of a larger program that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.
