  • Navy Captain Tests Positive for Coronavirus Days After Being Fired

The now fired captain of the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt has tested positive for COVID-19, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

On Wednesday, Thomas Modly, the acting Navy secretary, said the Navy was moving to do much of what Crozier asked in the letter, including a plan to move nearly 3,000 sailors off the ship within days. Crozier and said the letter could have sent a risky signal to enemies that the US military was compromised. The navy secretary's speech was obtained by the Daily Caller. "I didn't want that to happen again", he told the newspaper.

President Donald Trump, in a White House briefing, suggested he might be able to resolve the situation. Half of the crew's ship had also been tested for the virus. "The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating", Crozier wrote.

The Navy on Saturday said 155 Theodore Roosevelt sailors have now tested positive for the coronavirus but none have been hospitalized, with 44% of the ship's almost 5,000 crew having been tested so far.

But some senior Pentagon officials said Crozier erred by letting his plea go public.

Mr Esper said acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly made a "very tough decision" last Thursday to oust Capt Brett Crozier of command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Crozier's removal may have violated protective disclosure laws, which would have permitted him to report "gross mismanagement" by the Navy, said whistleblower attorney Stephen Kohn in a statement emailed to Stars and Stripes on Friday. "That's not appropriate, I don't think that's appropriate". It said he had begun exhibiting symptoms before leaving the ship on Thursday.

As Cozier left the ship, a now-viral video captured hundreds of sailors cheering the captain as he walked off the vessel, turned, saluted and got into a vehicle to await reassignment by the Navy.

Democrats have also sharply criticized the dismissal. "I told him that I wanted to come out to the ship...because I wanted to help", Modly told the ship's sailors. Fifteen days after the U.S.S. Roosevelt departed the Da Nang port, three sailors tested positive and marked the first reports of COVID-19 being present on a US military vessel at sea. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, who had initially sided with Milley and Gilday, then acceded to Trump's demand.

Esper pointed to the particular challenges facing the military - it is impossible to respect social distancing in a crowded bomber plane or in the confinement of a nuclear submarine, he told ABC.

Crozier's own illness is a further demonstration of the deep inroads that the coronavirus has made within the military.

Trump said Saturday that 1,000 military personnel, mostly doctors and nurses, would be deployed to help in New York City, the epicenter of the United States outbreak.
