U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the World Health Organization for being too focused on China and issuing bad advice during the coronavirus pandemic.

"They could have called it much earlier", Mr. Trump said. "For some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China centric", tweeted Trump.

At the same time, the U.S. comes second only to Italy in terms of the number of deaths from the novel coronavirus, which has claimed the lives of at least 9,559 people in the country according to a 7 April report from the global health body.

Trump made the comments at a White House press briefing as deaths and infections across the country continue to rise.

The United States, Australia, Singapore and a growing number of other countries were already denying entry to foreigners travelling from China in an effort to limit the spread of coronavirus. "We're going to put a hold on money [sent] to the WHO".

Trump made the announcement through his Twitter handle on Tuesday, April 7, adding that he did not understand why the USA was funding World Health Organization yet it was siding with China.

Two days later, Trump blocked most foreign nationals from entering the USA if they had been in China during the prior two weeks - a ban that still stands today. The United States also voluntarily gives between approximately $100 million and $400 million more per year to the World Health Organization for specific projects - contributions that totaled over $400 million in 2017, the most recent year for which figures are available.

The United States provides 14.67 percent of WHO's funding. The WHO's total budget for 2016 and 2017 combined was over $4 billion.

Mr. Trump said the USA pays a disproportionate amount to the public health arm of the United Nations, so he wants to see if it's worth committing the money. The president is no fan of spending US dollars around the world instead of at home, but withholding funding from the WHO amid a global pandemic is likely to spark criticism.

Trump on Tuesday noted that World Health Organization officials earlier this year denounced travel restrictions that countries began implementing to try to curb the spread of the virus, saying, "Fortunately I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on". The same day the health agency urged borders remain open, the Trump administration issued a travel advisory telling US citizens not to travel to China.

But it countered that the measures should be "short in duration, proportionate to the public health risks, and be reconsidered regularly as the situation evolves".
