Coronavirus: EPL players launch 'collective initiative' to help generate funds for NHS

  • Henderson Kane and Aubameyang were among those to post on social media about the move

"The contributions that this initiative will generate will help NHSCT quickly grant fund to the front line to support in a number of ways, including to help enhance the well-being of NHS staff, volunteers and patients impacted by COVID-19 as well as helping them in their work supporting many other critical areas of need both now and in the longer term".

The statement continued: "Over the course of the last week we, as a group of Premier League players, have held numerous talks together with the vision of creating a contribution fund that can be used to distribute money to where it's needed most in this COVID-19 crisis; helping those fighting for us on the NHS frontline as well as other key areas of need".

Premier League stars, including Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Manchester United's Harry Maguire, posted the message on their social media accounts.

It comes amid fierce criticism England's top-flight stars after a proposed 30 per cent pay cut to ease the financial burden on clubs was rejected by their union, the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), on the grounds that the British government would lose out on more than £200 million (NZ$417 million) in tax.

We can confirm that after extensive conversations between a huge number of players from all Premier League clubs we have created our own collective player initiative, #PlayersTogether, and we have partnered together with NHS Charities Together (NHSCT) in order to assist them in generating and distributing funds quickly and efficiently to where they are needed most.

"To try and help, along with so many others in the country, to make a real difference".

It was thought that as many as 240,000 people in the U.S. could die in the pandemic, according to the president's task force. State and local officials now acknowledge that the virus was nearly certainly in NY much earlier, the report said.

Talks between the 20 Premier League captains and other senior players were underway before Hancock and others called on footballers to do more.

And such a fund has now been introduced, with the Players Together initiative set up to "help those fighting for us on the NHS frontline".

"Mistakes are being made and have been made by loads of people and that's how we learn as well".

Health Secretary Matt Hancock - who called on players to take a pay cut last week - has praised their plan.

"Football is trying to do a lot of good", Townsend said. "To wake up and see footballers being painted as villains was a bit of a surprise". His job is the responsibility for NHS workers. Only 2,000 of them have been able to be tested for coronavirus. There is an acceptance that different players earn vastly different salaries and a desire to ensure all look like they are contributing fairly. "He is coming out and deflecting onto the easy targets, the footballers, and that doesn't sit right with me".

But talks over wage reductions are not proving straight forward and the continuing delays have intensified public debate and heightened concerns among clubs anxious about the financial impact if they are not cuts or deferrals.
