Unemployment rate in London climbs to almost 6 per cent

Economists warn the numbers will likely to be even worse for April, with millions more Canadians now receiving emergency federal aid.
With the novel coronavirus pandemic spreading worldwide leading to business closures and job losses, Statistics Canada has reported some grim unemployment rates here in B.C.
Figures released Thursday by Statistics Canada show the unemployment rate in the London Census Metropolitan Area, which includes St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities, was 5.8 per cent in March.
But since those heady days, unemployment has skyrocketed as governments ordered all but essential businesses to close and their workers to stay home in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.
The government says that there have been almost a million applications for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit on Monday, the first day people could apply. "This was about as bad as it could be given the weekly (unemployment) claims that have been divulged", said Derek Holt, vice president of capital markets economics at Scotiabank. "If this group were counted as unemployed, the adjusted unemployment rate would be 8.9%".
The greater concern is that infected owners pet their cats, who then leave the house and are petted or stroked by strangers. The body also added that it understood that some cats were unable to stay indoors due to "stress-related medical reasons".
The figure compared with a median forecast of 5.5 million, and the prior week's upwardly revised 6.87 million. The losses follow 6.6 million claims the week before, and a then-record 3.3 million the week before that.
Facebook says it's taking "aggressive" measures and is starting to remove any claims linking coronavirus to 5G networks. Twitter said it was increasing its use of machine learning and automation to help take down false information.
Employers can choose whether they will make up the difference - although they are not obliged to make up the shortfall. Businesses have to "designate affected employees as furloughed workers and notify your employees of this change".
In California, 15,865 people had tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday morning, an increase of 10.7% from the previous day. Jennifer Tong, a Valley Med physician who's in charge of the county's pandemic surge plan. "We are slowing things down".
The cruise industry was left out of the US$2.2 trillion USA stimulus bill, which excluded non-U.S. businesses. The company said last week that it expects most of its ships to be idled for a prolonged period.
