  • Fauci: Earlier social distancing measures 'obviously' would have saved more lives

Dr. Anthony Fauci said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday that "no one is going to deny" that more lives could have been saved during the coronavirus crisis if the Trump administration had implemented social distancing guidelines prior to March.

Trump said Saturday night that he hopes to make a decision "fairly soon" on when to reopen the country amid the coronavirus pandemic, telling Fox News' Jeanine Pirro, "We have to bring our country back".

"Maybe some states can open up mid May but we have to be very careful and make sure we don't lose all the effort the American people have put into closures by premature opening", he said. Sometimes, it's not. But.it is what it is. "We are where we are right now".

"It isn't like a light switch on and off", Fauci told the Journal podcast host Kate Linebaugh about the future, and what going back to normal could look like in the United States.

The expert, who has advised six successive presidents, made the remark in a CNN interview when he was asked if lives could have been saved in the USA with earlier mitigation.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday that the country could begin reopening in some aspects as early as next month, but the response will be different across the country.

Trump is eager to restart the economy, which has stalled because most Americans are under orders to "stay at home" to help slow the virus' spread. It will also involve, he said, keeping superstition at bay: "We must educate people on how to assess risk-benefit balance in varying situations".

As of Saturday, the USA surpassed Italy as the country with the highest number of coronavirus deaths, with more than 20,000 recorded according to NBC News figures.

The big picture: 530,006 Americans have contracted the virus, 20,608 have died from it and 32,110 have recovered as of Sunday morning, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

An administration official separately confirmed to CNN that the government's top public health experts agreed in the third week of February on the need to begin moving away from a containment strategy and toward a mitigation strategy that would involve strong social distancing measures.

"And I'd also say that if we acted on some of those warnings earlier, we would be in a much better position in terms of diagnostics and masks and personal protective equipment and getting our hospitals ready", he added.

Though there were some indications that the outbreak was "starting to turn the corner", any reopening of normal life across the country would occur in a "gradual" or "rolling" reentry, Fauci said. It is not going to be a light switch that we say, OK, it is now June, July, or whatever, click, the light switch goes back on.

He added: "It's going to be depending where you are in the country, the nature of the outbreak that you have already experienced and the threat of an outbreak that you may not have experienced".

He said that it can't be a "one-size fits all" type of deadline, explaining the outbreak and recovery in places like NY will be drastically different than Washington State given the number of cases in each epicenter.

"We are hoping by the end of the month we can look around and say, okay, is there any element here that we can safely and cautiously start pulling back on, if so, do it", he said.
