Iran Accuses U.S. Of Giving 'False' Account Of Gulf Encounter

21 Avril, 2020, 11:43 | Auteur: Anatole Charbonneau

Iran has denied any wrongdoing and called Washington's accusations a "Hollywood tale".

Iranian demands follow a statemnt by the US Navy, in which it was claimed that IRGC vessels violated worldwide norms as it "conducted harassing approaches" to American military ships.

At one point, an armed Iranian vessel came within 10 yards of a Coast Guard cutter.

The U.S. Navy posted a video of the latest incident on Twitter.

In its statement, the IRGC Navy denounced a repetition of "unprofessional" maneuvers by the "terrorist United States naval forces" in the Persian Gulf in recent weeks, saying they have intercepted Iranian ship "Shahid Siavashi" twice, on April 6 and 7.

The U.S. Navy said that the IRGC Navy's repeated maneuvers "increased the risk of miscalculation and collision".

USA oil prices tumble into negative territory for first time
The oil market crash is the latest economic sector to receive serious - albeit temporary - damage amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The futures contract for West Texas Intermediate lost $6 USA a barrel, going to $11.66 U.S. , the lowest level since 1999.

In the IRGC's telling, its forces were on a drill and faced "the unprofessional and provocative actions" of the USA ships.

"The IRGC navy and the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will consider the risky behavior of foreigners in the region as a threat to their national security, and give a decisive response to any miscalculation error".

When a fleet of 11 IRGC Navy boats were deployed to the exercise zone, they encountered the American warships and military vessels, it said, adding that the Americans made "unprofessional and provocative moves" and ignored the warnings from the IRGC forces, but the Iranians forced them to sail out of the path of the IRGC boats.

"The Iranian people are insightful and see who is right; we are at home and they have come from the other side of the world to create a problem for the countries of the region by threatening and sanctioning them", Hatami told reporters on the sidelines of a parade held on the occasion of Iran's Army Day.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked about the incident during a Fox News interview last week and whether he had consulted the Pentagon about the situation. "We're evaluating how best to respond and how best to communicate our displeasure with what. took place", Pompeo responded.
