  • Kobe Bryant crash victims' families file wrongful death suits

The world is still reeling from the tragic helicopter crash that took the lives of Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant, and 7 others-but our pain is nowhere near what the families of those who lost someone in the accident must be feeling right now.

Flowers and photos honor members of the Altobelli family outside Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. Coach John Altobelli, 56 (far right) his wife, Keri, 43 (second from left) and his daughter Alyssa, 13 (left) died in a helicopter crash on January 26 that also killed National Basketball Association star Kobe Bryant.

The pair of lawsuits comes about two months after Bryant's widow and mother of Gianna, Vanessa Bryant, also sued Island Express Helicopters, which operated the Sikorsky helicopter that crashed, and its owner, Island Express Holding.

Attorneys for Vanessa Bryant, Kobe Bryant's widow, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in February, on the same day a memorial service was held for her daughter and the Lakers superstar at the Staples Center.

A person who answered the phone at Island Express Helicopters declined to comment and an email from The Associated Press requesting comment was not immediately returned.

Oil prices go negative. What does that mean?
While DeHaan doesn't expect the drop to have any effect on retail gas prices, it doesn't mean the national average won't fall. The good news for drivers is that gas prices are going to continue to drop, which could help close this gap.

One suit was filed by two surviving children of Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli and his wife Keri.

In both suits - obtained by TMZ - the surviving family members claim Island Express negligently and carelessly breached its duty to own, lease, manage, maintain, control, entrust, charter and operate the helicopter in question in a reasonable manner. The news became even worse when it was reported that his 13-year-old daughter Gianna was also on board that flight.

The group was heading to a basketball tournament January 26 when the chopper crashed in thick fog northwest of Los Angeles. Zobayan had almost navigated the helicopter out of blinding clouds when the aircraft suddenly turned and plunged into the mountainside.

Nearly three months after LA basketball icon Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash, family members of four people who died in the crash are suing to hold the helicopter's owners liable in the deaths.
