  • Georgia, S.C., Tennessee governors say they'll reopen some businesses

States need to demonstrate a two-week downward trend in new cases, insure that hospitals have enough beds for patients and adequate testing measures are in place.

Several health experts and local government officials, however, have expressed concern that it may be too early to loosen lockdown measures.

Meanwhile, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said beaches and some retailers will be restored in the state. "We're talking about somebody who has put their whole life into building a business, that has people that they love and work with every single day - working in many of these places", Kemp said.

Georgia's timetable, one of the most aggressive in the nation, would allow gyms, hair salons, bowling alleys and tattoo parlors to reopen as long as owners follow strict social-distancing and hygiene requirements. Theaters and restaurants will be allowed to open on Monday, April 27, but bars and nightclubs will be barred from reopening for the time being.

On Tuesday, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham stated that he was anxious about the speed of Georgia's reopening, noting that he felt it was "too fast too soon".

The state had administered more than 84,000 tests though Monday, but its per-capita testing rate is in the bottom 10 of states and lower than neighbors Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.

Georgia health authorities have confirmed about 19,400 positive cases of COVID-19, with 3,700 hospitalized and 775 deaths as of Monday. "People will not come here if they think our businesses are not safe".

Of course, SC is also loosening some restrictions; a variety of retail stores were allowed to re-open Monday afternoon as long as they operated at 20 percent capacity or less.

Earlier this month, when Kemp made a decision to reverse course and issue a statewide stay-home order, he said he had only just learned that the virus could be spread in the absence of symptoms, even though experts had been warning for weeks about asymptomatic transmission.

McMaster also closed all nonessential businesses, making it near impossible for many local retail stores to generate any profits.

Biden Would Add Michelle Obama to His Ticket
Joe Biden said Monday he'd pick former first lady Michelle Obama as his running mate "in a heartbeat" if she were willing. Her husband, Barack Obama, was president of the United States from 2008 to 2016.

John Tecklenburg, mayor of Charleston, S.C., told a news conference Tuesday that his city would comply with McMaster's order.

"We have more people moving around, we're probably going to have to see our cases continue to go up, but we're a lot better prepared for that now than we were over a month ago", Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said Monday.

Which types of businesses slated to reopen first have yet to be determined. These things are concerning to me, Bottoms said.

State parks will be allowed to reopen Friday, with the caveat that residents practice proper social distancing.

On Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a series of executive orders to begin the process of reopening Texas' economy.

On Friday, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott announced that the state would adopt a phased approach to reopening the state.

In a statement he said: "These businesses will open according to specific guidance that we will provide in accordance with state and national experts in both medicine and business".

While many GOP states rush to get back to business as soon as possible, states with Democratic governors such as California do not have set deadlines for the timing of economic normalization.

SC has also announced plans to reopen the state's economy, but in a less aggressive fashion.

Employees are required to abide by the health and sanitation guidelines developed by the state, such as physical distancing and wearing non-medical cloth face coverings. Worse still, we are testing the wrong people.
