New York's preliminary antibody screening of 3,000 residents - which began this week - found that approximately 2.7 million people in the state may have already been infected with the disease.

Cuomo pointed to researchers at Northeastern University who estimated that more than 10,000 New Yorkers may have contracted the disease by the time the state had its first confirmed case on March 1.

The antibody tests were conducted at grocery and "big box" stores in 40 locations across 19 NY counties, and did not include bedridden patients or those too sick to venture out of their homes.

Cuomo revealed the antibody study data shows the statewide infection rate stands at 13.9%.

"The sample was by definition people who were outside the home", Cuomo said.

I think most of us have stories by now of how this virus bringing out the worst in a lot of people. He talks about where the state is now, where they want to be, what they've done so far to contain the virus, and what needs to be done moving forward.

Cuomo said this is an important message because of an expected second wave of COVID-19 or another virus.

Many nursing homes are privately owned, but they are regulated by the state.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that's still plausible, though the lack of comprehensive, widespread testing makes it hard to say for sure. "We'll have a larger and larger sample".

Uncertainty surrounds the accuracy of antibody tests, he said.

They were selected at supermarkets and had their blood taken by a finger-prick test from the state's health department. However, he recently extended the state's lockdown until mid-May and cautioned against permitting anyone to go back to work without widespread testing.

There were more than 15,000 people hospitalised statewide, continuing a slow decline.

If the results translate to the true incidence of the new coronavirus, it would mean 2.7 million people have been infected in the state of NY.
