  • Coronavirus hits third migrant facility as Greece plans to ease lockdown

Authorities in Greece have locked down a refugee hotel housing 470 asylum-seekers amid reports on Tuesday that scores of residents tested positive for the new coronavirus.

A United Nations body, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which managed the facility, said many people at the complex were from Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Illegal migration is facilitated by unsafe, malicious criminals, taking advantage of the desperate situations that many people find themselves in.

The residents were tested after a pregnant woman living in the facility tested positive for the COVID-19 during a visit at the Nafplio Hospital on Sunday.

A press release from the IOM, also on Tuesday, confirmed that the IOM had been following Greek government protocols since the first person at the hostel had tested positive last week. The shelter has been quarantined since April 16, when a staff member tested positive for the virus. According to the statement, they were both being quarantined in their homes. Rosso explained that it was also important that migrants not feel "that they are left alone or neglected, especially during this hard period".

The Greek authorities have announced city-wide movement restrictions for 15 days, from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am.

Compared with countries, such as Italy, Spain, France and Britain, Greece's toll from the coronavirus is low, but concern is mounting over its migrant population.

Greece on Thursday extended its general coronavirus lockdown by a week to May 4, saying any relaxation would be staggered out over May and June.

"That gives us some room to relax the measures, which will be done gradually and carefully", he said. There are still fears that if the infection takes hold in one of the overcrowded migrant camps or facilities, the current infection rate could significantly worsen.

On March 21, China delivered the first large shipment of medical supplies to Greece to help it fight the pandemic.
