The details of the gunman's assault on his girlfriend Saturday are the latest to emerge about the chaos that ensued as police sought the gunman as he went about rural Nova Scotia killing people in five communities and setting homes on fire.

Thirteen bodies were found inside and outside of homes in Portapique, authorities said.

The police said they took a 26-year-old man into custody without incident, and an airsoft pistol was found in the vehicle belonging to one of the men.

They searched for the suspect overnight. The occupants called 911 and confirmed the suspect was armed and was driving what looked like a police auto. "That could well have been the catalyst of events".

That came in addition to an earlier witness - wounded by a gunshot blast as Wortman drove by - telling investigators he'd been shot by someone driving a vehicle that resembled a police auto.

Sean McLeod and his partner Alanna Jenkins were among those killed.

Married couple Jamie Blair and Greg Blair were killed on Sunday, according to a relative.

This "obviously complicated things" and gave the suspect an "advantage" over police, the public and "every person that he encountered through the course of his rampage".
