NY bucks request from the Sanders campaign and cancels Democratic primary

  • Sen. Bernie Sanders

On Monday the New York Board of Elections voted to remove Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders from the state's presidential primary ballot thus canceling the state's primary election that was scheduled in June.

Following the decision, which could theoretically hinder former vice president Joe Biden's ability to reach the needed 1,991 delegates necessary for clinching the nomination on the first round at the convention, lawsuits and criticism began raining down on the state.

But the decision generated significant backlash from Sen.

The result was never in doubt after Biden's last rival, Bernie Sanders, dropped out of the race earlier this month.

Acknowledging that canceling the primary was "a very hard decision", Commissioner Doug Kellner nevertheless insisted it would have been "unnecessary and frivolous" to hold the vote given that Sanders had essentially dropped out.

In a statement, senior adviser Jeff Weaver called the cancellation an "outrage" and a "blow to American democracy".

"Just last week Vice President Biden warned the American people that President Trump could use the current crisis as an excuse to postpone the November election", the statement reads.

"No matter who you support, it is extremely risky that NY is establishing a precedent of cancelling elections citing COVID", she said.

Weaver said the action in Albany violated New York's approved delegate selection plan, and if it's not "remedied", the state should lose all its delegates to the party convention.

Sanders isn't the only candidate crying foul.

New York, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic, has cancelled its already once-delayed presidential primary.

LaRose asked the state's congressional delegation to pressure USPS brass in Washington to send more resources to OH to help with the surge in absentee ballots and said he's now satisfied the Post Office is meeting the challenge.

The move sets up a potential showdown with the national party and Sanders over the NY delegation to Democrats' summer convention, scheduled for the week of August 17 in Milwaukee. The Democratic presidential primary in NY would have allocated 274 pledged delegates, a tidy sum which Biden would have taken the vast majority of. Sanders would've picked up some as well, no doubt. The Sanders campaign called for NY to lose all of its 274 pledged delegates if it moves forward.

It can't be left without saying that there is one politician that this decision could theoretically benefit.

The Democratic members of the state's Board of Elections made the unprecedented decision in a vote Monday morning, the Associated Press reported. "Of course, I'll feel guilty if I don't vote". Election officials in the state's five most populous counties- Johnson, Sedgwick, Wyandotte, Shawnee and Douglas- are encouraging voters to exercise the option in the state-run August and November elections.

The AP called the race for the former vice president soon after unofficial election results started pouring in on Tuesday night from a contest that was conducted nearly entirely by mailed in absentee ballots.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was preparing to lengthen confinement measures for badly-hit areas.

As of Monday afternoon, NY had 291,996 positive cases and 17,303 deaths, per the state department of health.

That theory could be heading off into foil-hat land as a far-fetched outcome, but nothing is outside the realm of possibilities given the upheaval and unsettled nature the next several months will bring.

By then, the Democratic race became something of a foregone conclusion. Up until this point, the probability of that outcome seemed very low to near-impossible.
