  • Island travellers to be exempt from United Kingdom quarantine rules

British airlines say they have been informed of the government's intention to quarantine anyone who arrives on the island from any country except the Republic of Ireland, for 14 days, BNT reported, citing the BBC.

He has already said he will proceed with "maximum caution" to avoid exacerbating the outbreak in Britain, the worst hit country in Europe with 31,587 confirmed coronavirus deaths.

The quarantine plan was first reported by The Times newspaper, which said Prime Minister Boris Johnson would on Sunday announce that passengers arriving at airports and ports, including Britons returning from overseas, will have to self-isolate for a fortnight.

Visitors from neighbouring Ireland would be exempt, it said, as would lorry drivers bringing in crucial supplies - but the measure would include British nationals returning from overseas.

Industry body Airlines UK said the policy needed "a credible exit plan" and should be reviewed weekly.

UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is expected to make the announcement announcement in an address to the nation on Sunday.

The measure would be introduced from the end of May, the BBC reported. Airport operators said it could have a "devastating" impact on the aviation industry and the broader economy.
