Coronavirus: NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian expected to announce COVID-19 restriction relaxation

"For the first time since our lockdown what this means is that you can leave the home for recreational purposes", she told reporters in Sydney.

NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian said that the four-square-metre rule, which had been previously introduced on March 20, a week before the state-wide closure of hospitality venues, was deliberately restrictive.

Currently, two adults from the same household, along with their dependent children, can visit another home in NSW under the existing COVID-19 restrictions.

"Just because we're easing restrictions doesn't mean the virus is less deadly or of less threat".

Gatherings of up to 10 people will be permitted.

Cafes and restaurants will be allowed to re-open for up to 10 patrons and five people will be able to visit another person's home under an easing of coronavirus restrictions in NSW from Friday.

Schools will start a staggered return from tomorrow and Ms Berejiklian said it was "absolutely safe" to do so.

Weddings will be allowed to have up to 10 guests, while funerals can accommodate up to 20 mourners indoors and 30 outdoors.

Despite the welcome news of relaxed restrictions, the tone of Berejiklian's media briefing was undeniably stern as she urged people across the state not to be complacent in the coming weeks.

Berejiklian was unable to give a concrete timeline on when NSW might progress to stage two of the rollback, saying that the state would rely on the health data to inform its decision making.

"We don't have a vaccine".

Australia's three-stage plan for reopening, announced by Morrison on Friday, is created to be implemented by the eight states and territories at their own pace.

"I understand this may be confusing but I urge all Western Australians to remain focused on what we are doing here", Premier Mark McGowan said. Of the restrictions that prime minister Scott Morrison said could be immediately relaxed, NSW authorities will not allow travel within the state for holidays or recreation, and police will retain current powers to fine or arrest anyone found breaking this rule.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Testing for coronavirus is now widely available across Australia.
