Spanish police said Wednesday that a former Real Madrid player was among those arrested when they busted a suspected worldwide smuggling ring which infused cocaine into cardboard boxes. It's not a comfortable situation.

Congo was among 18 people arrested after Spain's National Police seized a ton of cocaine that was smuggled between layers of cardboard fruit boxes.

Following his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu, he spent some time on loan at Real Valladolid, Vitoria Guimaraes and Toulouse before playing for the likes of Levante, Sporting Gijon and Recreativo Huelva.

The former global striker Congo joined Madrid in 1999 but never made it into the first team, enjoying relative success after moving on to Levante in 2002.

"They asked me a series of questions and after that, I returned home".

"They asked me if I was connected to cocaine trafficking". The police told me I should stay away from people who aren't good for me, that I need to do things a different way.

He made 17 appearances for Colombia, scoring three times, and featured in the 1999 and 2004 Copa America tournaments. I don't have anything to do with it.

"I've tried to make a living via this friend, who is the one who has the connection". 'I'm free and I'm relaxed because I don't traffic cocaine, I don't have cocaine at home.

Congo protested his innocence and told El Chiringuito, a popular late-night television show where he is a regular guest: "I'm calm".
