Like many other cities across the world, the Big Apple chose to close non-essential businesses and prohibit most outdoor activity in a bid to reduce the spread of coronavirus, which has struck NY particularly hard.

New York Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg told the city council that New York has experienced 58 consecutive days without a pedestrian traffic fatality, the longest stretch since the city began keeping track of the statistic in 1983, according to an ABC News report.

The busiest city in the USA became almost empty after city officials ordered all non-essential businesses to close in March, to help prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

As a result, the city's typically congested streets have largely been emptied and traffic has been reduced to unprecedented levels. The citywide lockdown has left the streets empty for almost two months, and helped curb the number of pedestrian traffic fatalities to an all-time low.

Tuesday marked the 58th day since the last single pedestrian fatality in NY, the longest period without a pedestrian death since tracking began in 1983.

"Unfortunately some drivers are taking advantage of our empty streets to speed recklessly, and we know we can never let up our vigilance", Trottenberg said.

With the number of reported cases beginning to drop and temperatures on the rise, NY two weeks ago began preparing to open up to 100 miles of streets to offer New Yorkers more space to social distance outside as coronavirus lockdown measures continue. She also confirmed that the NYPD has stepped up targeted speed enforcement around the city as well.

Officials say they will continue to concentrate on growing Citi Bike with a focus on the impacts of COVID-19 and that New York City is looking into opening up the city's streets to pedestrians and cyclists after Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York would liberate 100 miles of streets from vehicle traffic, including 40 by the end of this month.

'Over the next month, we will create a minimum of 40 miles of open streets. And as the crisis continues, the goal is to get up to 100 miles, ' de Blasio said.
