Uber to require drivers, riders to wear face masks and open windows

Uber Technologies Inc. outlined new safety procedures at a virtual event on Wednesday, a move aimed to inspire more drivers and riders to feel comfortable getting in a shared auto again.

What they're saying: "What we are preparing for is the new normal", Uber director of product management Sachin Kansal said during a press call. The company said that it has obtained 20 million masks so far, and has given out a quarter of them to drivers.

Both drivers and passengers will be able to cancel rides without penalty if either party isn't wearing a mask. As a result, Uber announced cost-cutting measures last week, including ending food delivery operations in seven countries and trimming 14% of its workforce. "People will have new expectations of us".

Uber explains that they're rolling out a "Go Online Checklist" which will ensure that drivers take necessary safety precautions.

The new policies will remain for the next several months, according to Kansal, who added that "as the situation on the ground changes, we will evolve our policies as well".

Passengers will have to complete a checklist before scheduling their ride. Riders and drivers as well as delivery workers and even restaurants that use Uber Eats will have the power to report unsafe COVID-19 behavior and give low ratings. Effective May 18, riders and drivers in Canada, as well as the United States and other regions, will have to keep their face covered. The app also features a video tutorial on how to wear a mask.

Passengers will also be prompted by the app to confirm that they are wearing a mask or face covering, though they will not be required to submit a photo.

The selfie technology, which has been in use since 2016, isn't available on the rider app.

All passengers will also be required to sit in the back seat at all times and open a window for ventilation.

Additional guidelines, which will be in effect through at least the end of June, include reducing the maximum suggested number of passengers for an UberX ride from four to three.
