  • Jeremy Clarkson presents Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

When Andrew reached the 15th and final question, Clarkson told him: "This is it, the £1 million question".

Andrew Townsley, from Glasgow, could have been the sixth contestant to scoop the maximum prize on the ITV quiz show after correctly answering the first 14 questions.

The crucial final question asked: "Which of these iconic races was held first?"

It's been revealed that a retired doctor makes it to £1m question on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? tonight.

The four possible answers were: "Le Mans 24 Hours, Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 or Isle of Man TT".

Andrew phoned his friend Elsa.

When asked what answer he would have given, Andrew said he would have guessed that it was Isle Of Man TT.

"She told Jeremy Clarkson she'll buy a camper van with her winnings, so she shouldn't trust his "ask the host" answer #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire", commented another.

He opted to use his 50/50 for the £125,000 question before going on to use his "Ask The Host" and "Ask The Audience" lives. "You'd be the sixth person ever to do it in all the years this show has been on".

He added: "There can't be that many, I don't know how many, who even got to half a million".

Andrew, who has progressive multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair, spoke to GlasgowLive ahead of the show being broadcast.

"I thought it probably was the TT".

"When you apply to be on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? you always dream that you'd have the opportunity to answer that million pound question".

However, he was left looking visibly disheartened when he took a guess at the million pound question after locking in his decision to take home the penultimate prize, and discovered he would have got it right.

"The show went very quick".

Perhaps the most famous contestant in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire history, Major Charles Ingram, has been back in the news thanks to ITV drama Quiz.

Congratulations to Andrew. A remarkable effort.
