  • Daniel Ricciardo To Join Mc Laren In 2021 As Carlos Sainz Replacement

Ricciardo's name has widely been floated as a candidate to join Ferrari but Sainz has been handed the coveted spot at one of Formula One's most high-profile teams.

McLaren though didn't give up in trying to retain Sainz, who finished sixth in the Drivers standings past year, reportedly offering him a salary increase and hoping to pending Mercedes engine switch in 2021 could lure him to stay.

But with the market moving quickly after Vettel's Ferrari exit was decided, Ricciardo was snapped up by McLaren to partner Lando Norris from 2021 on a multi-year deal.

It is understood that the Enstone outfit will take their time considering their options.

Fernando Alonso, who won both his F1 titles with Renault, has been linked with a move, as has Sebastian Vettel after news of his end-of-season departure from Ferrari triggered this week's sudden driver merryground for next season.

It isn't clear where Vettel will end up or if he even stays with the sport.

Alonso said at the end of last year that he would consider a comeback to F1 after two years out, but he will have to weigh up whether he believes Renault will give him the competitive vehicle he says he wants.

"I think Alonso is desperate to get back into Formula 1, he'll be throwing his hat in the ring somewhere".

Of the Renault young drivers, Dane Christian Lundgaard and their Chinese reserve driver Guanyu Zhou are furthest up the ladder in Formula 2 this year.

"Whether it's for good or not, as we've seen with other drivers, remains to be seen".
