Coronavirus: UK arrivals to face $1,200 fines for breaking Covid-19 quarantine

Britain will introduce a COVID-19 quarantine for all travellers arriving from overseas from June 8, interior minister Priti Patel said on Friday, a measure that airlines have warned will devastate their industry.
A spokeswoman for Virgin Atlantic said today: "By introducing a mandatory 14-day self isolation for every single traveller entering the United Kingdom, the government's approach will prevent flights from resuming".
Under these new restrictions, travellers will undergo checks at the border and have to give details on where they are staying.
Breaches will be punishable with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice in England, or prosecution with an unlimited fine.
All worldwide arrivals, including returning Britons, will have to self-isolate and provide details of where they will be staying under the plans, which were criticised by airlines, business groups and politicians alike.
There will be exemptions for road haulage and freight workers to ensure the supply of goods is not impacted, medical professionals travelling to help with the fight against the virus and anyone moving from Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
Lewis continued that the quarantine period would be reviewed every three weeks - much like all of the government's legislation to find coronavirus.
The new move came as another 351 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Thursday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 36,393, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.
Passengers would have to fill in a form providing their contact and travel information so they can be traced if infections arise and can be contacted regularly during the 14-day period. Patel told a news conference that the government advice remained "very clear: nothing but essential travel" outside the country.
Trade body Airlines UK has said it "would effectively kill" worldwide travel to the UK. There will be spot checks where you could be contacted by phone by Public Health England officials who will ask you a series of questions about your self-isolation. They may also leave it in "an emergency", a spokeswoman added.
Officials would not be drawn on whether the measure will be in place long-term.
The Home Office said the proposed accommodation will need to meet necessary requirements, such as a hotel or a private address with friends or family.
