The United States being the worst-hit nation approached 100,000 COVID-19 deaths, On Sunday, The New York Times headed the grim milestone with a firm memorial on its front page, one-line obituaries for 1,000 victims.

The newspaper's cover headline, which reads "U.S. Deaths Near 100,000, an Incalculable Loss", has divided Twitter, with confused users questioning how The New York Times predicts tomorrow's fatalities, while others blamed US President Donald Trump for a weak response to the virus crisis in the country.

The US death toll stands at more than 97,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, by far the highest in the world, and the Times said it had been considering how to mark expected milestone of 100,000 deaths.

The newspaper will name 1,000 deaths, that is equal to 1 per cent of total casualties in the United States. "Simone Landon, assistant editor of the Graphics desk, wanted to represent the number in a way that conveyed both the vastness and the variety of lives lost".
